  • Introduction: The rs7903146 polymorphism in the TCF7L2 gene is the most common polymorphism associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between rs7903146 polymorphism in the TCF7L2 gene and type 2 diabetes mellitus in the population of Eest Azerbaijan Province, Iran.
  • Methods: A number of 101 blood samples were collected from patients with diabetes mellitus and 101 from healthy individuals. PCR and electrophoresis were performed after DNA extraction and quality assay of all samples with specific primer. Finally, PCR products were treated with Rsal restriction enzyme and re-electrophoresed and the target polymorphism was investigated. Finally, PCR products were treated with Rsal restriction enzyme and re-electrophoresed and the target polymorphism was investigated.
  • Results: The frequency of genotypes was calculated as TT = 33.7, CC = 16.8 and CT = 49.5 (percent) for healthy individuals and TT = 43, CC = 14 and TC = 43 (percent) for patients. The percentage of T allele in healthy individuals and patients was 42.1% and 64.5%, and the percentage of C allele in healthy individuals and patients was 57.9% and 35.5%, respectively.
  • Conclusion: There is possibly an association between the rs7903146 polymorphism in the TCF7L2 gene and the risk of diabetes mellitus. Therefore, further studies in this field can provide more accurate results and examine the diagnosis of the possibility of developing diabetes in different populations.
